[1.1.1] robbing shops

Can anyone answer these questions:
1. how to rob shop using invisibility? I tried to enter, grab item,
teleport away. When I arrived I received 'you feel observed' and
'alarm' with all thugs and angry shopkeeper. I did not received
'shopkeeper stared at your location' -- it is 100%.
2. Is there any way to 'pacify' shopkeeper and make him reopen shop? 😉
3. Which methods one can use to rob shops without alarm? So far I know
only about kick-robbing -- it does not work if shop has undiggable
walls.

Bye.
Sincerely yours, Michael.

Check the amount of money you owe. If it is 0 you have
successfully stolen the item. You do not need to teleport
out.

Not if you have stolen something. However if you anger him
with Ventriloquism you can use Calm Monster on him to make
him reopen the shop. If you steal the items in the shop
out of line of sight (should be easy with teleport as he
close and lock the door) you will not trigger the alarm.
This is one of the best ways to repetitively rob a shop.

I feel myself stupid, but I did not understand what you've said here.
Does it means that I when out of sight of shopkeeper I could just
pickup items and teleport away? If yes then I could use door creation,
close doors (too get of of sight), pickup everything and teleport away.
right?

Bye.

1) Use Ventriloquism on the shopkeeper. He will become
hostile, close the shop door and chase you. If case of the
casino shop you might wanna place a door in the corridor.

2) Let the shopkeeper chase you out of the shop. Teleport
as needed.

3) Teleport back into the shop and pick up everything. The
alarm will not sound as the shopkeeper is allready hostile
and outside the shop.

4) Teleport into the vicinity of the shopkeeper.

5) Cast Calm Monster until the shopkeeper becomes
non-hostile. He will then return and (eventually) restock.

Now about trick with invisibility:
1. cast invisibility while out of shopkeper's LOS
2. enter shop
3. pickup item, if your debt increases -- drop that item
4. repeat as needed until shop is clear

right?

Bye.

wrong unfortunately.

1. Pile every item in the shop in one square
2. Turn invisible while on this square
3. Pick up items you want
4. Check depts.
4a. If zero - continue to either pick up stuff and repeat
or immidiately drink potion of visibility to avoid
detection
4b. If non-zero - use extended drop Y and stop

The first time you encounter 4b it's all over. You will
_never_ be able to invisi-steal in that shop again.

No no, wrong again unfortunately.

1. Go into shop whilst visible.
2. Pile everything into a space next to the door.
3. Leave shop - turn invisibile whilst shopkeeper can't see you (that's the
important difference)
4. Re-enter shop and pick up everything on that one square
5. Check amount owed - if zero, then get out of the shop immediately

If the shop keeper sees you turn invisible then he'll see everything you do.
If the shopkeeper stares in your direction whilst you're invisible, then
anything else you pick up you'll have to drop or pay for. That's why it's
best to put everything in the quare next to the door - that way he has the
least chance of seeing you before you pick up everything and run.

Hmm... What about Teleportilis disease? you walk in, pick up
everything. wait until teleported. drop everything in that extra turn.
Pickup nobody's goodies 🙂 Could it be coupled with Teleport
control...

:) nah... too unreliable. Especially if second attempt is not allowed

Sorry, but this is wrong too :-D You can turn invisible in front of the
shopkeeper, you don't need to pick everything up at once (that way or
one at a time there's a chance for each item of the shopkeeper noticing
you) and you don't need to leave immediately - once you take an item
without being noticed, it's yours.

Incidentally, I discovered another, albeit unreliable, way to rob a
shop: reading books! If you get teleported out of a shop by failing to
read a book you have one turn before the alarm goes off. If you drop
everything unpaid on that turn you can then pick it up again free.

I'm never wrong (apart from when I'm not right, but that doesn't count). If
you turn invisible in front of the shopkeeper then he will notice ou
straight away - you can't pick up anything without him seeing. This at
least is my understanding. If that's not the case then in my experience
every time I turn invisible in the LOS of the shopkeeper he sees me straight
away, so it must at least increase his chances of seeing you.

You don't have to pick absolutely everything up, but my point was that you
should have all of the items you want in one square so your character can
pick the lot up in one turn (so the shopkeeper doesn't get a chanee to see
you). Leaving immediately means the shopkeeper doesn't get a chance to see
through your invisibility, so you can repeat the process again at a later
point in time (ie. after our good merchant friend has restcked)

Wow, not heard of that before - kinda neat, but obviously only for
non-spellcasters who would get that, and unreliable in the sense of there's
no guarunteed way of causing the teleportation... Also, does it always give
you one turn after teleporting? Or is it a case of if your speed's higher
than the shopkeeper and you get to action before he does then you get the
chance?

Then drop your items, smile nervously at the shopkeepers, and walk out of
the shop whistling non-chalantly...

I don't know if a shopkeeper sees you once, if you can go and use the whole
invisibility trick on him a second time later...

I seem to recall doing it (almost) while invisible once before. I used an
invisibility spell followed by teleporting in, stealing things and
teleporting to the stairwell. I don't knkow if you can still d oit though...

I dunno, I've never seen it to make a difference - if anything I'd think
it'd make things worse because you have to take time to get back to the
stuff, giving the shopkeeper extra turns to notice you. But I promise
you it's doable in LOS. Easy enough to check anyway, just start a few
wizards until you get a PoInvis, go to terinyo and shoplift some food :)

Actually, you also don't need to be in the shopkeeper's LOS to be
detected - I've gotten "you feel observed" even when I haven't found the
shopkeeper yet 🙁 I think this is probably a bug but who knows? The best
idea to avoid detection I think was another poster's suggestion of a potion
of visibility.

That I don't know, but since shopkeepers are awfully fast and this
wasn't a particularly high-level character I doubt it. Be kinda boring
to research, too...
