I dunno, I've never seen it to make a difference - if anything I'd think
it'd make things worse because you have to take time to get back to the
stuff, giving the shopkeeper extra turns to notice you. But I promise
you it's doable in LOS. Easy enough to check anyway, just start a few
wizards until you get a PoInvis, go to terinyo and shoplift some food

Actually, you also don't need to be in the shopkeeper's LOS to be
detected - I've gotten "you feel observed" even when I haven't found the
shopkeeper yet
🙁 I think this is probably a bug but who knows? The best
idea to avoid detection I think was another poster's suggestion of a potion
of visibility.

That I don't know, but since shopkeepers are awfully fast and this
wasn't a particularly high-level character I doubt it. Be kinda boring
to research, too...
