I just recently ordered a 1.33 ghz Athlon-C, an Asus A7M266 mboard, and 512 MB of the crucial PC2100 sdram. I was wondering what would be the best cooling solution for around $100 and how migh higher could I overclock my processor? (Note: I don't care if it's noisy, can't be louder than the 3 old SCSI HD's I'm going to be using.)

i have the same set up as you and ppl answered it pritty well just look over it and it sould answered your question

You can find reasonable water cooling solutions for around $100. Also, get a peltier. You should be able to overclock to around 1.5Ghz with that 1.33- maybe more.

A decent heatsink runs around $25, you can find 85W peltiers for under $30. You'll have to have a second power source for the peltier though, if you don't want to pull 7-8amps on your main supply. A 300 watt supply runs $25, but only puts out a little over 12V. You can find car battery chargers down at the local pawn shop for $30, that put out just over 14V. Watercooling usually runs around $120-$150, depending on whether you make some of the parts yourself or buy everything commercially. It takes a bit of assembly, and you'll have to check your hoses/pump/block on a fairly consistant basis. You can muffle the pump slightly.

In that price range, the minimum is aircooling, slightly better with the air cooled peltier, quite a bit better with a watercooler, and probably top out with a watercooled peltier.

Put in the money and go for VapoChill... if not, stick on to GlobalWIN WBK-38. Check out VapoChill's website at http://www.vapochill.com/

Nav Dude: Did you already get the mobo or are you justing thinking about the asus board.

The reason I ask is because Tom did a good write up on this board, so you could check out if it is what you want. See his area on mainboards.

Oh ya, about the cooler, I would get the best one on the market, the swifttech MC 462 (i think that is it). Tom did a write up on it and it was the best one.

It is really loud though, but I was just looking on the swiftech web site, you can get it with a reostat now, so you can turn down the fan speed when you don't need all the cooling power. This would be a great HSF unit if you are overclocking...

but I realize that you are NOT overclocking, the board won't let you, so perhaps this cooler is not really required. But, it is less than $100, and will do a great job of cooling for you.

My second choice would be the thermo-engine heat sink. Tom did not review it but it looks good too. You can see it here...

Or you might also consider the all copper Global Win HSF unit. See the web site above for a cooler round-up, you will see it there.
