So I just ordered a matching ram stick to upgrade from 4GB to 8GB on my notebook. I was at my friends house which has the exact same notebook model. I checked in CPU-Z on his notebook and the ram showed 1.5V. So i ordered a 1.5v matching ram.

When i came home and checked on my notebook, again, the exact same model, bought from same store. It shows 1.35v.

What exactly will happen if i put the 1.5v ram stick in my notebook? Will it run at 1.35v with no problems or is it pure luck if it would work at all?

Same ram came with our laptops, he hasn't changed any ram or upgraded anything.

This shows in my CPU-Z:

Down at the voltage value, it shows 1.5V on my friends laptop.

Actually, i was wrong. Just checked with my friends laptop and he has a different pre-installed ram.

Does that mean the 1.5V i just purchased will run on my laptop, even though the pre-installed one i have in my laptop is 1.35V? I'm guessing the 1.35V ram will overvolt to 1.5V or the 1.5V ram will undervolt to 1.35V. Either way, do you think this will cause issues? Too bad the bios doesn't let me change the voltage manually.

It's SK Hynix ram, don't know why it shows Hyundai.

I'll simply have to try when i get the ram in a day or two. If it doesn't work i'll just return it then. Thank you for your help!

Although i just came up with this thought, that maybe i could switch ram with him. So he gets my 1.35V and i'll get his 1.5V ram and that way they're both 1.5V when i get the upgrade i ordered.

you could email the laptop vendor. it could be that at some point they ran out of one ram and was able to buy the other ram at the same price and both will work on the laptop system board. or during the middle of the production run they changed system board and the newer system board could use lower voltage ram to save on battery life.

Good idea. Post back with how it goes.

So I got the ram today, installed it and the laptop booted up as normal, no errors or anything. I can see in windows it's seeing the 8GB. Everything is working perfect, but i haven't done any heavy multi-tasking yet so i can't be too sure until i run some tests with memtest.

The 1.5V ram is also running at 1.35V now, to match the existing ram that's already installed. Slot 2 is the pre-installed ram. Slot 1 is the new one.

I'll post back with results after memtest, but seems to be running fine as of now.

EDIT: According to various sites, the 2nd memory i bought is actually at 1.35V standard, and not 1.5V as stated by the seller i bought it from. That might explain why it's working with no trouble at all.

I guess this is solved then, thanks for the help everyone!
