1.61b rant

Finally got the 1.61b update installed, and working. Of course to do
this I had to totally uninstall BF1942, DC, DCF, etc. Then reinstall
it all over again. I don't know what kind of exploit that guy found
and alerted EA to, but for all the hassle I just went thru I hope it
was a good one!

There, I feel better now.

the only two problems i've seen from folks installing 1.61b is the folks
that have battlefield installed into a custom directory or another drive
other than "C". seems as though there's no prompt for changing the drive
or folder to install the patch into.... i didn't experience this first
hand, but i've heard of a few folks having trouble with it and this is
one of the causes.

the other problem is when someone is using a windows xp "media" edition
with service pack 2, something goes wrong, i don't know what it is, but
if they uninstall sp2 and reinstall bf, it works.

Yeah.......I think I do! *L*

CF hit the problem on the head. I had it installed in my D drive,
and no amount of fiddling could get the thing to work. So now its
all on my C drive, and working fine.

Now I'm simply curious as to what the great "problem" was that
required it. I'm guessing it had to be more than someone figuring
how to get a gun to auto reload or something like that.

basically, the problem was, a malicious server owner, under certain
circumstances, could manipulate network settings and flood the server
list with gamespy and thus creating a Denial of Service (DoS) attack on
the clients attempting to connect.

SP 2 killed half my games and completely killed my LAN. It went away real
fast from my machine.

There is some twisted irony when a bunch of folks just want to have a
little fun, and there is (potentially at least) some yahoo plotting to
jam up the net.

OT........I read some of the thread about the PunkBuster questions.
While I'm not hyper paranoid (and I'm not saying anyone in that
discussion is) about what PunkBuster is doing while looking for
cheats, they could go a long way in allaying concerns by spelling out
a policy of what they do with the information they collect, and what
limits they put (on themselves) for collecting information.

And now back to the games!

they won't do that because they say it may give the cheat creators
something to go on and develop cheats to circumvent their techniques.

SP2 wreaked some havoc on my box too. The uninstalling failed (thanks a
bunch, yeah) because after that everything became unpredictable. Then I
finally re-installed the box from scratch, something I really hate doing
because it's a shitload of work with all the apps and so on, with a
brand-new CD already on SP2 level. No problems with that, everything's
working. Applying SP2 on a running system apparently isn't quite the
simple cakewalk it's supposed to be.
