I just bought a shuttle XPC SS56L from newegg, my first XPC... Anyway, here's my rig...

Shuttle SS56L
P4 1.7GHz (400MHz FSB) - 2nd hand from eBay
Corsair Twinx 3200C2PT 512MB
Seagate 80GB 7200RPM 8MB Cache HD
NEC N2500A 8x DVD+/-R burner

Everything else is onboard (SIS graphics & chipset, sound, LAN... etc)

I hooked everything up last night, turned it on, nothing. The light is on, the CPU fan is at full speed, but no *beep*, no screen, no sound, nothing... If something is bad, I'd expect to at least see a message on screen, perhaps I could even get into the BIOS... right? Nothing. Does this mean (the biggest possibility) the CPU is dead? I have never encountered one before so I'm not sure.

Thanks for your help.

That's pretty hefty memory for a 400mhz board. The timings may be too tight to function with that MB. You'll have to refer to the first post in Motherboards and try everything there first. Most E-Bayer's do not want to sell DOA parts. Leads to bad feedback and no future sales. But, it DOES happen. Try everything else first.

That CPU is based on the willamette core, are you sure the mobo in the XPC can support its voltage requirements?

Damn'it! You're right! I just checked Shuttle's website - "1. Intel Pentium 4/Celeron(478-pin) support Northwood processor with 400/533/800(CPU internal core bus) MHz FSB only. 2. Willamette core CPUs are not supported."

Gosh! How careless of me! I only checked the socket type, didn't realize a different core could mean incompatibility. Thanks tombance.

Good reason to replace it. The 1.7 was a very poor performer anyway, and ran very hot for it's performance level.

No Problems

As Crash said, that was a pretty bad CPU anyway, you would be much better off getting something else, even if its a 1.6A you could still probabaly overclock it to 2.4Ghz.
