1 Gig Ram Chips?

Hi folks, I want to buy a pair of DDR400 1 gig ram chips to put into a dual channel Gigabyte GA-8KNXP motherbaord, but I'm confused by what I see listed. I keep seeing items listed as 2x512, and as far as I can tell they are indeed two separate 512 meg chips, not a single 1 gig chip.

So is there such a thing as 1 gig memory chips? The reason I want 1 gig chips is that there are only one slot on each of the motherboard's memory busses the will work in dual channel mode (are there any motherboards that can use more than one slot in dual channel mode?), and I need two gigs of ram for the type of work I'm doing (3D modeling and visual effects compositing).

So if there are 1 gig chips, can I get some info on who makes them and if you can post any links where I can get them (or if anyone knows of a motherboard that can use multiple chips in a dual channel arrangement).

Try zipzoomfly and new egg--I think one or both of them has corsair xms in 2 gig (1gig x 2 modules) matched pairs
*I just looked yea zip zoom fly has em ---they are about $550 though, ouch. -some kinston too but they are even more.

My friend has your same board...

If you buy for instance TWO separate kits of 2x512MB...amounting to a total of FOUR STICKS, 512MB each....you can still run ALL FOUR OF THEM IN DUAL CHANNEL...

Put the two modules from one kit in banks 1 & 4...these are the banks with different colors....

Put the other two modules from the other Kit in the ADJACENT banks..ie: banks 2 & 5...

This way you will still have 2GIGS running DUAL CHANNEL...and cheaper than 1GIG sticks..

You can run up to 4 modules in dual channel mode at least...I'm not sure about slots 5 and 6 on some Gigabyte boards but I don't recommend using them anyway, because they require single-sided memory to be used in the last 4 slots.

Can most motherboards cope with using four DIMMs in dual channel mode?

Most 865/875 board have 4 DIMMs and can use all 4 in dual channel mode (two DIMMs per channel). Memory timings become a little more critical, but as long as your memory has the extra stability needed, it's not a problem.

What if the modules are overclocked to 250Mhz? Im debating whether I should sell my 2x256 DIMMS and buy 2x512 or if I should just get another 2x256.

Great question! Remember that PC4000 requires manually raised vDIMM just to get to its rated speed. But I think you could get by with another 2x256MB as long as you have the necessary room for adjustment in BIOS.

Well Im using 2x256 Geil RAM at the mo, my BIOS allows me to go up to 2.95vddr (which is the highest my RAM is rated for). I would just h8 to buy another 2x256mb set just to find out it doesnt run stably.

I think you'll be OK, 2.95v is pleanty of room for most PC4000, even with 4 DIMMs
