If I'm trying to trouble shoot my RAM, will my system function fine if I only leave in 1 stick of my dual channel RAM?

Everything I've seen on the net always talks about different placements for your 2, 3, or 4 sticks, but never a single one.

Dual channel is an feature that can be enabled only with 2 or 4 sticks. It uses a set of two sticks to double the memory bus width (2x512mb of 64-bit RAM will run like 1x1gb of 128-bit RAM).
doubling the bus width doubles the amount of data that can be transmitted at the same RAM frequency

Your system will still work with only one stick, but it will only be able to run in single channel mode, so your memory bandwidth will be reduced.
