Hi, I bought an Asus x501u 2 years ago, after 1 year the motherboard died, i can't get a replacement. It ran windows 8. I was wondering if it is possible to put the ssd drive into my dell desktop (inspiron 530s) running Vista?

I tried plugging it in the motherboard using a sata cable and the spare power lead, changing boot order (even took out the other hard drive) but it is not recognised, any tips, clues on what i am doing wrong or simply can it not work?

Ideally i would like to put win 8 on the Dell as it is just sitting collecting dust!

Thanks in advance.

Mark

Some people have reported that Win 8 can sort out its own drivers on a new mb .

Try having it as the only hard drive attached.
If it goes into a repair it will take time and maybe run .
What it definitely should not do is activate on new hardware.
In that scenario you could try upgrading to win 10 and maybe paying a license fee.

What you should be able to do is boot to vista with it plugged in and copy files . If it won't do that it might also be damaged

Windows 8 will definitely sort out drivers on a new board. I have done it a few times with success. All you need to do is call the robots and re-activate it.

The issue he has is that it will not activate as a legit copy of Windows because it came form a branded PC.
