I built a PC, and generally speaking the temperatures seem to be pretty good. The computer idles around 35-40 degrees C, and during gaming it doesn't seem to get over 60 C. But while I was trans-coding some video files, the temperatures hit 100 C within less than a minute. I also downloaded Prime95 to run some stress tests and had the same results. Is 100 degrees C normal for a heavy load on an i7?

Solution
100 C is getting close to the point where it will shut itself down (about 105). I don't do much that seriously stresses my cpu, but if I were to guess from what I've heard, you might want to shoot for for 60-70 degrees as ideal when getting pushed with 70-80 when the cpu is getting pushed really hard

I agree with the evo, it's a cheap but effective solution, and from what I've heard it's quieter as well. The backplate can be a bit annoying, but once you get that on the rest is fairly simple

I have the stock cooler on it that came with the processor. So that's not good enough? haven't overclocked it at all. :/

What would you consider normal temperature? I hear so many different things. Interesting note: I went into the ASUS bios settings and changed the computer from "high performance" mode to the middle option, and now when I'm running the tests, my CPU is averaging 75 C. Is that an acceptable temp?

Hmm thanks, I think I'm going to get the evo, it looks like a great cooler. Will I need to buy thermal paste with that as well? If so, does anyone have any recommendations of thermal paste to buy or is it all the same?
