I moved into a new house with some new roomies. I'm used to having a direct line to my computer for internet, but had to settle on wireless until I could get my hands on a 100ft cat5e cable. This is my first time using wireless (Belkin USB receiver), and my roomies seem to be getting a WAY better internet connection / speed than I am.

So I finally got the cable from Amazon (seen here), carefully set it up, plugged it into the router and the computer and....well, nothing. The port light on the ethernet plug-in on my computer lights up, as does my router no matter which port I use.

I have little knowledge in getting into advanced networking/cable stuff, so I apologize ahead of time. Really having a frustrating time figuring this one out. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

You may have to create a network connection. Most the time machines have these for the lan ports but it may be disabled or something.

Get tough to guess so many things can cause ports to not work. Pretty much the lights tell you the cable is good and both devices function at a hardware level. It is likely just some setting in the PC. Also you can't really have the wireless and the wired active at the same time. Most machine prefer the wired but some do not. I would try to unplug the belkin and see if it makes any difference....you can disable it in software if you prefer.

I have tried removing the Belkin, but nothing happens after that. Do I need to uninstall the Belkin before the line will come up as connecting to the internet? Do you recommend a place to start to root out the problem?

It has to be something very basic in the network settings for ethernet port. ipconfig command should show if you are getting a IP or if you even see the ethernet device. You need to go into the network settings for that device and see if it thinks it is connected and if it is has all the proper things enabled....like getting a ip automatically. You might run the network setup wizard thing and see if it give you a clue....but this may have been the thing that messed it up in the first place.
