A friend said he was building a computer with over 100GB of RAM! I told him he was crazy. I then found computers online that had 60+ memory capcity.

Why would someone need this much RAM and is it worth buying?

Mainly used in servers, and no, it's not worth buying - very heavy video editing uses around 24GB max, and I mean very very heavy, AFAIK. Games/Photoshop don't use more than 4GB RAM, basic/amateur video editing uses between 6GB-12GB.

Figure the cost of that much RAM. The minimum size he could use is 4Gb sticks if he could find a motherboard with 24 slots. Your BS meter should be going off.

Of course if he's rich it wouldn't matter.

Hi newcomer and welcome to the Tom's hardware forum.

As Lmeow says, is mainly used for servers or workstations that support really hard work.

For example, THIS mobo can support 256GB of RAM and 4 quad-core processors. If you bear in mind that the Shreck's creators used 100 similar systems (I don't remember very well) like this.....that is a really hard work.
