[SOLVED] 100Mbps router only running at 1Mbps and lower for the most part?

I have it plugged to my pc via ethernet cable.
I am a total noob when it comes to networking issues or tinkering with router settings.


I've had this problem for approx 3 years now, nothing helps. I've even gotten in contact with the isp but with no help received from their end either.
They've basically said that i'll need to move it to a different location but nothing ever changes.

I have tried tuning settings, factory resetting them, restarting my router countless of times, changed position of the router, changed ethernet cable and pretty much every trick the internet has to offer but to no avail.

Currently writing this because a game on steam im downloading right now is taking 7 hours to finish 2gigs..

The only way this network is usable is when its midnight, usually at 3-6AM my download speed is more like ~30Mbps.. Getting really tired of having 3 hours of working internet.

Anyone any help?

That's the maximum speed that your router can deliver via an Ethernet cable - it doesn't mean that you can get that speed from your ISP.

That sounds very much like you're in a low-speed area and your ISP is oversubscribed and at peak times there are too many users online.

Do you have any other ISP options? I don't know what region you're in but in the UK ISPs will give an indication of the speeds available and sometimes a minimum-speed guarantee before signing up.

A key thing that is not in your post is that you are getting your ISP connection from a mobile broadband provider (ie cellphone tower).

The speed you get is directly related to how much signal you get from the cell tower and the distance of the cell tower from your house.

On a nice day I would try to put the router outside and see if you get better results. There is almost nothing you can do to fix issues like this. If you are in a poor coverage area it will be slow. You might consider a different cell provider that has better coverage for the area you live in.

To some extent it is strange it works in the middle of the night but that could be there are very limited number of cell towers where you live and too many people are trying to use them. Again your only option is to see if there is another ISP.

I know some areas there is only 1 cell provider with coverage and because they know there is no competition they get away with selling crappy service.

I've changed my isp 4 times and the same problem is always, i have no clue whats wrong. Something is definitely wrong with my hardware or something.. There's a wifi tower like 1km away and its for current isp too.
I have also checked the best isp for my area but every isp seems to work exactly like the last one.

Or i just live in a bad place for a solid connection. That's my guess too since ive tried pretty much everything there is to offer.
Would an antenna fix or make my connection better?

Try a cell phone on the same ISP provider and see what rates you get on speedtest. This should show if the router has a issue. Again I would place the router outside to test if it is a signal strength issue.
It depends on what country you live in. Antenna are technically illegal in most countries. Most router do not even have antenna connections for the mobile broadband. Some people get very ambitious and connect them to the main board internally.
What you want is a yaggi antenna tuned to the frequencies used by your ISP. It should improve the signal levels.....be sure that is your actual problem.

If you do use a antenna I would keep quiet about it. In the USA you generally only get in trouble if it causes some problem for other people or the ISP. The fine is rather large if they wanted to actually come after you.

But you're getting a fast connection between midnight and 06:00 so I can't see how it can be a problem with your hardware.

If you have any neighbours that get their Internet the same way from the same tower then you could ask them what their speeds are like.
