Question 10400 overheating

Hi all,


I just replaced my thermal paste on my 10400 and whenever i turn it on, the CPU jumps up to 100 degrees celsius. The compound I used was Noctua’s NT-H1 Thermal Compound I have no idea why it’s doing this but it would be appreciated if I could get some help

With what software are you monitoring the temps with?

I’m using the BIOS on my motherboard which is Gigabyte B460M DS3H, the CPU and heatsink around it feels extremely hot to touch.

What cooler do u have?

I’m using the intel stock cooler, but I installed it correctly and have only been use it for around 5 days.

Take the CMOS battery out,wait 2 mins,then put it back in.
Also are u sure thoose temps Celsius not Fahrenheit?

Yes, it’s 100 C, not F. How do I take out that battery?

Bassically what this does is reset the bios settings.Have u tried booting into windows?
Or does it just shut off?

It boots up, it remains at 100c. The usage remains unchanged (idles at like 5 percent usage)

Removing the CMOS battery has done nothing, the temperature remains at 99-100 degrees. The heatsinc and area around the CPU on the motherboard are extremely hot to touch

See the weird thing is,if your i5 10400 gets to 100C it should techicaly shut the pc off to prevent it self from dying,but since it doesnt,its kinda weird
Also are u 100% sure u have applied enoguh thermal paste and are u 100% sure that the cooler is mounted the right way?

I’m really not sure why, this is my third reapplication of thermal paste. It doesn’t turn off my fans turn onto full speed about three seconds after booting

Can you RMA the cpu?

I reapplied thermal paste, it’s idling at 45 degrees, but it appears to be heating up slower. As I just finished typing this its already reached 47C

How xD?
For a stock cooler 45c idle is normal.Glad this turned out to be a simple thermal paste fix,rather than a RMA

Ahaha, thanks so much. I’m new to building PCs and haven’t heard of this happening before so I was worried.
