Hi,
A few years ago i built Amd rig, now i want to upgrade my gpu to rx 480 custom cards, but seems like they are taking their sweet time, and availability is the other issue, so i was wondering what if i get gtx 1060 instead? Will it work with my amd set up properly?
I am not sure what to check for compatibility.
thanks!

my mobo ASUS M5A97 LE
and cpu AMD FX-8350
gpu hd7870 ghz edition

Any card will work, but might be held back in certain games depending on what GPU you end up going for.

The custom RX 480's are supposed to be out this week by the way, I know Sapphire and ASUS started sending cards out to reviewers last week and a few reviewers received them today.

We are both in the same boat. I also have a 8350 and a 7950.

I am thinking of going with the 1060 due to the higher CPU overhead needed with AMD Graphics cards. (If you are unfamiliar with this, basically AMD Gpus are better when they are paired with Processors with faster single core performance which AMD CPUs struggle with. Heres an article showing what I mean http://www.overclock.net/t/1495236/amd-vs-nvidia-cpu-overhead. The 780ti and 290x are closer in performance when using a 4690k but when using a 8350 the 780ti pulls ahead.)

Plus the 1060 runs cooler, uses less power and overclocks a lot better.
Tech of Tomorrow did a video using the 1060 paired with a 8350 and it performed pretty well, better than what the RX 480 did with the 8350.

Here you go.

that sounds good, but how do i put them together? is there a link that i can check it out?

I think he means with DirectX 12's Multi-GPU using MDA. It would work in theory, but in practise probably not very well, they're too mismatched.

so no need to bother with that than? anyway thanks a lot

Sorry for my late response. I've been running my 960 and 7870 (plus intel 4600) with good results, witcher 3 at 4K medium-high, GTA V 4K high, etc. Works better than most would think - as anyone knows that detail shouldn't be reachable with either card individually. Be sure to have your most powerful card in your primary slot as I think I read that does make a difference. I imagine having two ATI or nvidia cards would be even better, but I'll let you know how it goes when i dump my 7870 for my 1060. Multi gpu using dx12 links them for you, sending instructions to all available gpus.

Edit: I should mention that I likely have vram issues trying to force 4k res through those two cards, despite the vram being additive (2gb+2gb+whatever the intel is). Adding the 6gb 1060 should give you enough to not have to worry, as I'm hoping it will for me as well.

There are several applications of multiadapter, so in my experience the programs don't need to necessarily be developed in DX12 for this to work, as the system seems to be able to deliver instructions to any gpu all by itself?

What programs are you using then? As natively them games will not use both gpus together and combine performance from both.
