I care about how it performs in games thats probably the OPs main concern as well, the 1060 performs better than the 970 in almost every game. It performs more on par with a 980. Both the 1060 3gb and 1060 6gb are better cards than the 970 for gaming. Here is a 16 game average benchmark, if that is not good enough for you I will show the 1060 beating a 970 in individual games as well. For a gpu thats for gaming, yes FPS is one of the primary concerns.

Yep, you either need an active adapter like the one Dunlop posted or you need to upgrade to a new monitor that supports DVI, HDMI, or DisplayPort. If your VGA only monitor's resolution is less than 1920x1080 I would probably upgrade.

I just bought the monitor and it is 1080p so I can't upgrade.

Do you know the model number of the monitor? Most modern monitors support more than one kind of input. I would be surprised to see a new monitor that only supports VGA. If it supports HDMI or DisplayPort this is as simple as buying the right kind of cable. You can get decent quality cables for less than $10.

Yes, that adapter should work. I would still recommend using an HDMI or DisplayPort cable instead of an adapter if your monitor supports either of those. If your monitor only supports VGA this will get the job done though.

According to the item description on Amazon that monitor does only support VGA. The store page also links to a newer (and cheaper) version of that monitor that supports VGA and HDMI as well as having a 24" screen instead of 21.5".

If you are still in the return window I would consider sending yours back for the newer, cheaper, and bigger model that won't require any adapters.

thing is you could have got a 900 series card and it would have worked native right out of the box with the included dvi-''I'' to vga adaptor [except gigabyte there too cheap to include one in the box for their cards ]

with a 900 card it would have supported you not you now having to support it $$

some reviews of the 10 series states this

thing is with a 900 series its plug and play with a 10 series hes buying extra to make the card work buy a 400 $ card that supports you or a 400$ card that you now got to go spend extra on a funky adaptor that ''may'' work as you expect or buy a new monitor to support the card [150-200$]

just went with a 980ti and all my stuff works from xp to crt vga monitors with out any extra cost to me . a 10 series cant no way do that

like I say no point buying a card you got to go support when theres cards that will fully support you

No, not in my opinion. The 1060 is a better card than the 970 with or without analog support.

your call all I was pointing out is the 10 series don't support your monitor with out you going and paying extra to make it

a gtx 980ti is about gtx 1070 / 80 performance

$400? The 1060 3GB he said he was buying is $200. I don't even see any 960s in stock on Amazon and most of the ones still available on Newegg are selling for $300+ since the stock is so low. Since the 1060 is significantly better than a 960 I can't see any situation in which it would make more sense to make that choice just so you don't have to buy a $14 adapter.

I could see what you are saying making sense on a GTX 970 since the performance is only a little worse than a 1060 if the pricing was equal. It isn't though. The cheapest 970 available on Amazon is a blower style Asus card for $298.97. There is a Gigabyte 1060 3GB for $194.89. You are talking about spending nearly $100 more to get a card that performs a little worse just so you don't have to buy a $14 adapter.

Edit: With used pricing I guess you can get a 970 for about the same price as a 1060. I still wouldn't recommend buying a used 970 when you can have a brand new 1060 for the same price.

no I used single card results [''1''] not any well hang on I see it changed on that 970 link

still a few points or same price for the cards but for the 10 series your buying a new monitor or a adaptor that ''may'' do as you need on top of the cards price ??

so with a 10 card you 300$ then now you need a monitor 200 or a active adaptor that ''may'' work out 15 -30$

or a 970 for one price that works out of the box ? not a hard choice for me and why I went with a 980ti


also with the 10 series it limited for OS support I can use it with al my OS/s the 10 cant - see what I mean on how you now got to support them not them support you and all your needs ??

so my card scores 985 and a 10 series scores 1000 big deal there

any way it all your call on what you feel is best for you - its not my systems or money being spent here buy the card that fits 1/2 your needs or one that covers all your needs so you get 60 fps instead of 68 fps will you see that in reallife ??

Again, you have the pricing wrong. The 1060 3GB is $200, not $300. A new 970 is $300. I could see the justification for what you are saying if the two cards were the same price but they aren't. It does not make sense to buy a card from the previous generation for an extra $100 just to avoid paying $14 for an adapter.

Also, I'm not sure why you keep saying the adapter may or may not work. That active adapter is specifically designed to take a digital DVI-D signal and make it usable on a VGA monitor. That is exactly what the OP is trying to do. I just did a quick look through the reviews on Amazon and found several of them that mention that they are using that exact adapter with GTX 1050 and 1060 cards on their VGA monitors. I don't see why it wouldn't work for the OP.
