1070, 1070ti, or 1080? Using an i5 4690k

I'm in the market for a new GPU, I've been using my 970 since release and it's served me well, but since I got a 144 hz monitor it has left something to be desired. My CPU is an i5 4690k that I've overclocked to 4.4 ghz.

I was wondering which GPU I should get if I wanted to maintain 144+ fps in 1080p. I know that my CPU is bottlenecking to an extent, but at the moment getting a new CPU, new motherboard, and having to reinstall Windows due to Microsoft's stupid policy of linking your product ID to your motherboard is just too much of a hassle.

The 1070, 1070ti, and 1080 can all be found in the $350 - $450 price range. And again this would be for 1080p gaming at 144hz

In games like CS, Fortnite and Doom 2016 a 1070 is good enough for consistency. Heavier games a 1080Ti would be better. 1080p may appear to be a low res in today's standards but maintaining 144fps is a different ball park.

Maybe wait for the new cards

Your i5 even if overclocked will be letting you down in a lot of games at the frame rates you're desiring. CPU usage will be in the mid 90s and frame rates will be lower in multi threaded games. I've seen it happen and see it happening on newer gen 4c 4t CPUs as well complaining of high CPU usages with these cards. Games like Ghost Recon, Bf1 and Fc5 in either 1080p or 1440p, 4c 4t CPUs isn't enough nowadays.

144Hz at 1080p is a decent demand. I would definitely recommend the GTX 1080 in order to achieve a good, stable frame rate. I was running a 1080 at 1080p with an i7-4790K and would get about 180 FPS idle and 120 average for your average FPS.

I don't know your time table, but something worth noting is the upcoming release of Nvidia's next gen Turing* cards scheduled for around late august. I know the graphics card market has gotten better for buyers as of recently, but could be worth waiting and getting an even better deal.

*Apparently next gen is not Volta, they're Turing micro-architecture now

No I have it overclocked already on a Z97 motherboard. I'm doing 4.4 ghz with a Hyper 212. EVGA sells refurbed 1080s on ebay for $430, so not technically new but they are refurbed and warrantied by EBGA

Oh crap I guess I'll wait than, I read somewhere they weren't going to introduce them for a while since the 1000 series has been more than enough for recent games

Nvidia has a conference August 20th where they're expected to formally unveil some of their gen cards like the GTX 1180. They generally do a rolling release and will wait a couple months before release the higher end cards like 1180Ti (or whatever they end up calling it).

That being said, the escalating trade war with China could increase future GPU prices, especially since the semi-conductor industry is likely to be suffer as it is one of the few major US industries China imports from the US. All that being said, I don't think anything will impact GPU pricing that much in the immediate future. Sounds like your set on a new graphics card, I would probably just go for it. The market can be such a crap shoot if you find a good deal I would say just pull the trigger.

Depends. TSMC is a Taiwanese company. They will not be affected by the same tariffs as China.

If new cards get released I'd still go for a last gen card as I'm banking on the prices going down, I can wait until the 20th though
