1070 or 1080?

I'm thinking of upgrading my 970, and the 1070 seems like a good choice right now. It might seem a bit ridiculous to think that I want 1080 when I'm playing at 1080p but it seems I won't get my full value for only buying a 1070, when I can buy a 1080.

What should I choose?

Ethereum miners have destroyed the GTX 1070 and RX 580 availability and prices. Depends on where you live. In the North American market as well as some markets in Europe, the GTX 1070 is scarce to be found and when in stock, priced within 10% of a 1080, making the 1080 a no-brainer considering it's 20-25% faster depending on game.

Going with a 1080 also gives you an upgrade path should you want to move up to say a 1440p or Gsync 144Hz 1080p monitor.

Think to yourself, do you really need it. I find the 970 is holding up quite nicely so I'm waiting for the next generation of cards. If not, the 1070 is a good shout, wouldn't go for the 1080 but rather the 1080ti as it's a pretty significant performance boost

To be honest, I don't need to upgrade, I just love buying new parts for myself. I'm addicted ahaha

Nothing wrong with that....it's your money! However I only upgrade when I need to, like going from 1080p to 1440p. The 1080Ti is way overkill for you though.

Under normal pricing, a 1080 is $550USD and 1080Ti $750USD. At 1080p resolution, the GTX 1080Ti is only between 10-20% faster than a GTX 1080 depending on game but costs 37% more. However at 1440p the gap widens between the 1080Ti and 1080 making it closer to worth the increased price/performance ratio (something I watch closely). Case in point, BF1:

1080p: GTX 1080 -> 145fps, GTX 1080Ti -> 161FPS
1440p: GTX 1080 -> 98fps, GTX 1080Ti -> 131FPS
