1070 or Vega 56?

Hello everyone!

I currently have a 144hz freesync monitor and was looking to upgrade my GPU.

(I realize it is overkill for the CPU and GPU I have in there now but I intended to future proof it)

I will be upgrading to a Ryzen 5 2600 to ensure I dont bottleneck my new GPU but was wondering if I should go with something between a 1070-1080 or a Vega 56 for freesync.

I noticed the Vega 56 cards run a little more expensive then nvidias and tend to run hotter and draw more power.

Will my 550W PSU be able to handle a Vega 56 / 1070-1080?

I'd like to achieve 144fps constantly at 1080p and was not sure if I should spend a little more for the Vega for freesync or just get a better preforming nvidia card.

If they're roughly the same price, since you have a freesync monitor probably Vega 56. Your PSU will be able to handle it, but you won't be able to BIOS mod and exceed the factory limited power draw on that card, which you probably don't want to do anyways. If they're not the same price, let us know how much the difference is.

Agree with first reply. In a vacuum I'd take the 1070, but with Freesync the Vega makes sense as long as there isn't a huge price difference.

The Vega 56 cards seem to run as low as $380 and goes up to around $455 for some nicer aftermarket ones: (I prefer the look of the more expensive aftermarket ones)

1070's are as low as $375
1070ti's as low as $410
1080 around $500

Would spending a little more for aesthetics and a better cooling Vega 56 that will allow freesync be a better choice then a 1070ti-1080 for the same price and no freesync?

Hmmmm, I'd go with the MSI Duke 1070 ti if it's specifically at newegg prices, but it's a tossup between that and the powercolor Vega 56 IMO as long as the open box models retain the manufacturer warranty, which I would hope they do.

EDIT: This is a tough one, neither decision is bad. Depends on how much you value the freesync capability. Honestly if this was me I'd literally flip a coin.

If you're always going to be setting up your games to get over 100-120fps, then yeah probably. If you want to play at ultra settings and stick more in the 70-90 range, then I'd probably go with the vega and use freesync. Kind of a hard decision and neither is wrong.
