So i have a 1080 founders edition. Im looking to replace the cooler with one that will keep it cooler.
First off my question is can I replace the cooler on a founders edition or is it gonna be major surgery to get the stock fan housing off.

Then the question of what cooler. I was looking at the arctic brand ones, would hybrid or air be better? I'll probly play around with overclocking see what gains it gets me.

So if it's possible what cooler would you suggest?

Solution
I love the blower style coolers.
They get the hot gpu air out of the case directly.
Fan type coolers are good in an open test bed, but in a case, they depend on good case cooling to do the job.

As to overclocking, you could get lucky. Or not.
Go ahead and see how you do.
80c. is about the temperature that a graphics card will target for performance.

Solution
Don't the blower style coolers generally run hotter?

I don't usually buy this type of card but due to the market I cant really be picky. I Just thought I read the founders editions don't run as cool as a dual fan

Graphics cards will target a temperature to run at.
That is typically 80c.
They will ramp up the fans to try and maintain that temperature and, they will increase clock rates to improve performance with that in mind.

No doubt, a blower type cooler is not as efficient as one with multiple fans.
The good thing is that the interior or your case and the air feeding your cpu cooler will be cooler.

With today's market, count yourself lucky to find a good card at all.

If a card does the job you need it to do, it is good; a GTX1080 of any kind is near the top regardless of cooler type.
If you need to overclock, you may not be able to do much, regardless of the cooler.
Graphics chips are binned and those with OC potential are used in factory overclocked versions that sell for a premium.

You might get lucky, it costs nothing to try.
I would work with what you have first before deciding if the expense of a cooler change might be worth it.
