I would say yes. My 1st LCD monitor was 1280x1024 that I bought back in 2002/2003. I upgraded to a 1920x1200 resolution monitor in 2008. The difference is substantial because you get a wider field of view; meaning you get a panoramic view of the game world. It makes gaming a bit more immersive. In real life your vision is wide as opposed to squarish. Though your extreme left and right vision will not be focused.
Just realize that the higher the resolution (more pixels), the more powerful a graphics card you need if you want at least a certain level of performance. A 1920x1080 resolution monitor has 58% more pixels than a 1280x1024 monitor. Roughly speaking you will take a 58% performance hit if you keep the same graphics card and switch out the monitor. The difference is actually a little lower and it can vary from game to game. But you should get the basic idea.
Say the GTX 650 will give you 75FPS when playing Game A on your 1280x1024 monitor. Switching to a 1920x1080 would mean you will now only get about 47FPS.
