1080p gaming on a 1440p monitor

Solution
Horrible. Gaming in not native resolution on LCDs is a no-go. There are few exceptions, like 1080p on a 3840x2160 display, as that is literally twice the pixels in with and height and equates to each pixel in the 1080p image being displayed on 4 full pixels in a 2x2 suqare on teh display.

No. Native will always trumpnon-native if you are talking similar quality displays.

With the exceptions of resolutions that are exact doubling of horizontal and vertical, downscaling will always look like shite. On LCD's native resolution will always look the best. If you want to use a 1440 monitor especially you will need the GPU to push it, or be able to push enough AA to make it look Ok. 4k can downscale nicely as you simple take 4 4k pixels to make 1 1080 pixel. 1440 the math doesn't pan out sadly.

Point I was trying to make was that it "can" look good on a good 1440p monitor. For example, My Asus PG278Q at 1080p, IMO, looks and performs better than it did on my last gaming monitor, which was a 1080p HP Pavilion that was no slouch itself. But then you get into the other side of the debate... if you were to purchase a high end 1440p monitor like that with a high price tag, then it doesn't make sense to use it at 1080p from a financial perspective.

Overall, it's agreed that native resolution results in the best overall quality. But there are definitely monitors above 1080p that can look good at that setting.
