I upgraded from a 1280x1024 Dell E190S 19" from 2006, and boy I'm so glad I did. Everything is so much better. Any 1080p monitor will outperform this.
That's a decent monitor. I got the 21.5" AOC IPS I2269VM today and I love it. It can be wall mounted, has built in speakers, 2 HDMI, 1 VGA, 1 Displayport, MHL here it is http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824160167&cm_re=aoc_21.5-_-24-160-167-_-Product by far the best monitor I have used. AOC is not the best brand, but if you're looking for an affordable, quality monitor that doesn't break the bank, this is a good one. There is also a 23" version.

Any monitor branded for "gaming" will be more expensive than a conventional monitor. Do you need 144hz or will a regular display be okay?

I would take a 144hz if it was under 150$ if not a regular display would be completely fine.
