1080p PC output to 4K Tv set.

I am running a Windows 7 based PC for video and photo editing. It has amongst other things an Nvidia GTX770 GPU to speed things up and is plugged into my 4K Samsung Tv set via using an HDMI cable. Now I sort of assumed that I would get a proper 4K picture and video signal sent to the telly and would be looking at all the data from the original image and video files.
Then I read that even with a fancy GPU Windows 7 still can't handle anything bigger than 1080p.So I'm guessing that what happens is that my GPU is fed 4K image data that it then re-samples down to 1080p.It's then passed along the HDMI cable to the telly, which then re-samples it up by guessing at the missing pixels to make an image that will fill a 4K screen. The telly is set in the GPU control panel to mirror what's on my 1080p PC monitor.
This of course gives an image that is of lower quality than the original. If I load the same video or still images onto a USB flash drive and plug it into a USB port on the telly, the improvement in quality is obvious to even an untrained eye as it's now not throwing anything away and then having to guess what is missing to build the full screen image.
So do I understand this correctly and it's Windows 7 that is preventing my PC from sending a full 4K signal to my telly,or is there more to it than this and there isn't some hidden setting on my GPU I can activate to get round this problem?

Thanks I'll have a look at that when I get time. But it seems odd that it's anything to do with the remote desktop function? (In my limited knowledge of this subject that is!)

Thanks, but it (the GPU control panel) won't let me select 4K because the computer monitor is only 1080p with it as the primary. No matter how I do it,I never get the option for 4K.

I see it's supposed to,but I don't get anything above 1080p.Is it Windows stopping it from going any higher?

Yes.As soon as I unplug the PC monitor,it also switches off the output to the TV.But at no time do I ever get the option in the GPU control panel to select 4K.
If I set the TV as the primary monitor,I only see 1/4 of the picture on my PC monitor.

Possibly not.But I'm still remembering that I read somewhere that Windows 7 only does 4K by scaling.

Im on windows 7 too and i can run 4k no problem on a 4k Tv. There's no such limitation. Limitation is the hardware and Hdmi version.

Hdmi 2 which was introduced with 9 series GeForce are able to do 4k60Hz. Older gens needed a Displayport to Hdmi active adapter to do the same. Hdmi 1.4 spec on your card is limited to 4k 30Hz.

Try adjust Hz to 30 or lower and see if 4k is available then.

It sort of works, but the text is too small to read.Even if I enlarge them (up to 150%) they're still not big enough.

The TV is a Samsung 55MU6470U.

It won't let me go below 50Hz.

Are you sure that you're actually seeing a true 4K image even though it fills a 4K screen, and not just one that's been upsampled from 1080?

That's weird. Try in NvidiaCP / resolution then. Should have 24Hz.

Positive. Because the resolution set on the computer is 3840 x 2160 and not 1080p.

If I set to 'Duplicate these displays' in windows (as I have always been) it allows me to set all available screen resolutions and refresh rates for my PC monitor (Acer G246HL),but all these options are greyed out for my Samsung TV and won't allow me to change ANY settings on it.

If I change the Windows setting to 'Extend these displays' I get all options for the Samsung (including 3840 x 2160 which it picks automatically as the native setting) and all for the Acer. But like this the Acer only shows the desktop image but not any actually clickable icons.

Like this the Samsung is I think displaying the proper un-resampled 4K image as the text is certainly a lot sharper if I enlarge it enough to be able to read it.The photos are I think of better quality, although I have this nagging doubt that they're not quite there still.I will have to try to switch between the photos stored on the USB drive plugged into the telly and the same ones stored on my to be absolutely certain.

But the above configuration only lets me use the TV for viewing and using the PC.I need to use my computer monitor for typing etc and the TV for photo editing, but it's a real pain to have to change all this lot round every time, when before I only had to move from one chair to another one.

Thanks for the link, but isn't that for if your PC doesn't have an HDMI port, which mine does have?

Was thinking instead of using hdmi + dvi is it?

Hdmi + dvi might be on the same bus on the card giving you grief.

Displayport 1.2 to hdmi 2 would give you 4k 60Hz on your Tv. And connect your other monitor via dvi or hdmi whichever you're using.
