Bought my first gaming PC with a ASUS gtx 1080 GPU and was basically wondering which is better for gaming, 1080p or 1440p? (Just a side note, 4K to me is not playable at all.. Didn't buy a gaming PC to play games at 30-50 fps, so don't try sell me on the joke that is 4K)

Now I understand 1440p is far more detailed and offers a sharper/crisper image when gaming, but is the extra money really worth it? And can a single GTX 1080 handle 100fps at 1440p?

For a single GTX 1080 I would go with either 1080P/144hz or 1440P/60hz, I feel either monitor setup would benefit from the GTX 1080 and would easily handle the highest settings. If you were running SLI 1080's then you could go with 4K/60hz. Personally I went with 1080P/144hz since I play a lot of FPS like BF4 and the increased frame rate over 60hz was a massive improvement although if you play more single player games, MMOs and such then I would probably go with the 1440P/60hz or 1440P/144hz if it fits within your budget.

If you're thinking Gsync do it, that chip in the monitor will save you an upgrade in future. 27" is good size for 1440p and 144Hz is also pretty awesome. 1440p & Gsync start in 27"

As a bonus 1080p still looks great on decent 1440p screen if you need the fps boost. I do it on a XB270HU sometimes. Good to be flexible, not that you'll need to with a GTX1080, but the option is there.
