1080p vs Standard

So basically, I play Skyrim on my PS3 on a 46" HDTV and play on output of 1080p. And the frames drop a lot, often, and it doesn't have that great fps overall. I was at my friends house, playing Skyrim on his small tv, like a standard with output of Video 4:3, and it seemed surprisingly smoother. Similar to a PC games resolution, the fps improves greatly when reduced. So will the same happen for PS3? If I switch from 1080p video output to a Standard 4:3, will the fps improve? Or is it just my mind playing tricks on me? Thanks.

I think it's just easier to see the FPS drop on a big TV.

P. S. PS3 does not do 1080p, all it does is 720p.

To elaborate on the above it upscales games to your 1080p output and that will not affect the framerates. It allows 1080p output so you can play blue rays in "true" HD.

The fps on the PS3 won't change with resolution like on a PC, they are built to output the same fps no matter what you connect to.
