I'm looking to upgrade my current gpu, the gtx 970, as I recently picked up a 34' 1440p Ultrawide monitor. Is the 1080ti enough to run current titles, as well as offering a little head room for future games, at 1440p Ultrawide resolution?. It's a 60hz monitor so i'm really only looking for a stable 60fps. I've held off buying anything until the announcement of the new 20 RTX series but those prices are crazy. Here in Canada the 2080ti will be a $2000 card with tax, that's madness. The 10 series starts to look a lot better, especially if there's a significant price drop when the 20 series comes out.

It depends what games you want to play? AAA titles, properly optimized games, etc... Are you a casual gamer or do you jump on your PC everyday? That being said when you get a card like the 1080ti or 2080ti you pretty much DL a game, slam everything on ultra and don't look back. There's no tweaking.

Even a 1050ti will run 3440x1440 if you dont want to run ultra settings but will require tweaking. Check this out.

I'd wait one month for the 20xx cards so we can REALLY see their performance. That said the 1080 ti will be great at 1440 for a good 4 years. BUT I think the ray tracing tech on the 20 cards is pretty exciting and i'd wait and see how well it works/if it's worth it for you.

i would agree with waiting to see the graphical performance at 4k, however, to OP, don't be disappointed when you see the actual performance,

the issue is that in CANADA, 1080ti is around $900 cdn and 2080ti preorder starts at $1600 cdn. with 13~15% tax, we are looking at $2000 cdn for a 2080 ti,

A GTX1080ti is a nice jump over your GTX970.
It should do the job very well for you.

As with any new gpu, you can expect to see some glitches so the new product is not fully formed yet.
I would go ahead with a GTX1080ti.

To hedge your bet a bit, buy a EVGA card which has a 90 day trade up option.

I appreciate all the advice, thanks. I do plan on waiting for actual benchmarks of the rtx cards before buying a 1080ti , just in case there is a performance increase that justifies those prices. The ray tracing definitely looks cool but if its going to be a performance killer even at 1080p, its something i'm likely to leave off.

Do not worry about ray tracing, games will need to implement it before being able to use it. Also, this is the first generation card with ray tracing and future cards should provide faster ray tracing capability. Before anyone responds, yes, I know that other techniques are out there that are somewhat like ray tracing. At this time ray tracing is basically a new gimmick by Nvidia to pull in new customers. After the vast over production of 1080 GPUs they need money to make up for current overstock that may not sell.

This guy is the best I have seen regarding computer tech on youtube, RTS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_x1JGG4JC8&t=352s

In short, yes and GTX 1080Ti will handle it no problem.

I have a 100 hz 3440x1440 and run a 1080. If I where you I would look into the newer cards comeing out. I know the ti is decently faster then the 1080 but fallout 4 runs around 40 with everything maxxed out. Most other games seem to be into the 80s. Graphics keep getting better I seriously doubt that the ti will keep you from upgradeing for 4 years. I guess it really depends on if you don't mind turning things down.

hii, am using Acer Z35P, a ultra wide 1440 monitor, 100hz over-clocked to 120hz, only played WoW mainly and sometimes FIFA18 & Forza Motorsport 7, also supported by zotac 1080ti core, with i7-4790k z97, yes, 1080ti is more than sufficient for above average settings, though i admit i didn't push my graphics card to highest possible settings, as afraid of early burntout from Singapore's humid sunny weather. me think if your ultrawide monitor only 60hz, even a 1070 is sufficient, unless people saying highest graphics settings, anyway my 2¢ worth of opinion

The game he used was a low spec game.... Destiney 2 doesn't need a lot of GPU power.

Don't even try running a game like FARCRY 5, PUBG, ROTR etc AAA games at that resolution on a GTX 1050Ti.

Precisely why I said it depends entirely on what play style he has and games he wants to play. PUBG is a bad example to use as an optimized AAA title game.
