Question 1080Ti vs 2070

I am building a new PC and I have everything bought brand new except my last part which is the graphics card. I can buy the 2070 from zotac for $529 or I have the opportunity to pick up a 1080Ti off of craigslist for $500 (there are 3 at this price). The money isn't the issue but I want the best performance for my dollar. I will be doing 1440p with an extra 1080p monitor. I'm just looking for someone to lay out which to buy because I've been pulling my hair out over it for the last 3 days Thank you

I'd pick the RTX 2070. The better DXR support and in-store 2-3 years warranty is worth the extra $30.

GTX 1080 Ti is better than RTX 2070,

Though, be aware of Craigslist scams. (I'd avoid it if possible and you don't get any warranty with used GPU either.)

To be honest 1080Ti and 2070 are virtually identical in terms of performance, the only real difference being the lack of RTX Ray Tracing support on the 1080Ti. If it were me i'd go 2070. No brainer really.

1080ti perforns a bit better and has more vram.
2070 has ray tracing support and a warranty.

I have got a guy with a 1080Ti SC for $450 with a 1 year warranty still on it (do not know if that transfers to the next user) and with video of it working. Most people that have responded are split on this choice, is it a bit more worth it for that $450 price? Thanks

I'd find out if the warranty is transferable. Then you just have to decide if you're comfortable with used hardware. Either card will perform great at 1440.

$450 for a used GTX 1080 Ti without warranty is reasonable price since at current date, brand new GTX 1080 Ti costs $800 - $1000. If the GPU would have transferable warranty, $600 - $700 would be fair price for it.

Were the 3 from the same seller? That smells of mining card and I wouldn't touch it.

That said, unless it comes with original receipt and warranty I wouldn't touch it at this price. I would get something with a warranty. The 2070 (1080 equivalent) is fine for 1440p

If you can hold off a little bit, the prices should be coming down soon on the 2080 and 2070. You might be able to pick up a 2070 super (which is close to 1080ti performance) for about $550->$599.

As a whole, I think prices are stupid expensive right now. So I'm sitting this one out (again)

I would NEVER buy a 2nd hand GPU but that's just me. Go 2070 for my money. I've got a 1080Ti and if someone wanted to swap i'd be fine with that.

Uh, just to keep in mind here:

2070 slightly outperforms 1080
2080 slightly outperforms 1080Ti

But the 1080Ti is a faster than the 2070.


Note that there will be a few exceptions/outliers to the above.


That said, spending that much money, I'd prefer to go new with a full warranty. The 1080Ti will outperform the 2070 most of the time, but the 2070 being new with warranty makes me more comfortable.

In the US, as far as a I know, the warranty only applies to the original purchaser. The exception is certain EVGA models, and only if they were originally purchased from EVGA. If the seller is claiming the warranty is transferable, I would demand proof first.

I somewhat agree with this. Usually, you can get a refurbished card with a few month warranty for a comparable price to used.
Unfortunately, this doesn't always work. I got a refurbished sapphire 480 with corrupt vbios and error code 43. I probably could have flipped the vbios switch, but i ended up reflashing it and now it works fine. New is always best but you can get some value used if you are willing to spruce up the card.

Update-
I got the 1080Ti for $450 because the card was about an hour and a half drive away. It is the EVGA SC version and it was purchased from EVGA and came with one year (or so) left on the warranty with all the fun paperwork to show it. So far it looks great and runs even better.
Who knows, I keep seeing more and more pop up on the ole' craigslist, might have some SLI in the future if these cards are really only going for $450-500

Good to know - and the warranty transfer makes it worthwhile.

I would pass on SLI, though. Multi-card support is dying off.
