This build for my friend will be used mainly for gaming, some video editing, any suggestions? The price is about $1250 and we'd like to push down the price as much as possible to maybe $1100 without sacrificing too much performance.

Why the Zalman? He is going to be moving his case around the house and possibly to some LANs. Neither of us liked the idea of a big metal block hanging over the mobo during transit.

Easiest way to get within budget is to drop the HD7970 to a R9 280X, or cheaper HD7970. As near as makes no difference, the same thing, and you should save around $80.
You could also drop to 8Gb of ram, roughly half the price, that's another $60.
I don't like the case much, but that's a subjective really.
