This question has been asked before, i know but i am looking for a specific detail.

Will switching from 1333 to 1600, and lowering memory size from 12 to 8 GB (both Corsair) will improve my system performance in FULLHD video and 3D rendering software (no gaming at all!)

Specs:

i7 3770, Asus B75, GTX 660 2 GB
Cooler Master 600 Watt. PSU

P.S. If anyone here is familiar with the software Video Copilot Element 3D. Will 1600 RAM will improve preview speed.

Solution
Hello! I recommend 12GB or more.

It doesn´t matter if it is slow, for render there is no difference, but having only 8GB cause lot of problems, 3D MAX or other programs will need Virtual Memory (HDD) and is very slow... Recently I did a project that requires 28GB of memory, I only have 8GB and it becomes very frustrating when Windows start to write to the HDD.

I dont know if Video Copilot Element 3D will need more than 12, sorry.

Time ago I see a review with DDR2 666.... to DDR2 1300, and the render time was exactly the same.

Another thing is thst Win7 x64 and a lot of programs installed, use 2GB RAM and only left 6 GB for programs.

PD: Sorry about my basic english.
The ram speed probably own't make a huge dif, but the size might. A way to tell, start up a full render, and use task manager to monitor how much ram is being used. If you are using more than 8, than "upgrading" will really be downgrading because then your system will have to start using page files and slow everything down.

You can also try overclocking your ram to get it closer to 1600 speed and spend nothing.

In a rendering situation though, I would think that the more ram the better and would hate to go down in size.

Since the software you mentioned uses opengl rendering for all of it's stuff, I would video card is the thing you want the fastest of.

Dammit! Wanted to go the cheaper route. Could've exchanged my two RAM's and gotten 8 GB 1600 and then some...

I am upgrading from 650ti 1 Gb to either 660 2 Gb (non Ti) or 760 Gb, but if i buy 760 i have to upgrade my PSU too, if i by 660, upgrading my memory speed seems like a logical solution). Now, whatever i do, i am going over-budget, anyway!

Well, thank you. That really helped. But what about graphic card, which one do you have, in fact can you please post your system specs.

Well, theoretically, yes, but my PSU originally is 550 watts (below 760 requirement) and is a very unreliable brand. If i do buy a new psu it will be real 600 watt cooler master or corsair.

Well, I have a low PC (it was a monster 7 years ago) Q6600@3.4GHz with 8GB DDR2, Arkangel 850 80+, and HD5850 (no good for Render with Vray RT or anything), and Win7 uses 2 GB of RAM only 6 for Work, I forced Virtual memory to 32GB minimum and 32GB maximum. For now I can´t afford a new PC, but I have in mind a 4930k, 64GB Gskill Ripjaws 2400, Asus x79 Pro and a GTX780ti.

Seriously if I can put more RAM in my PC, I only pay for that. The 4930k is only 3 times faster than my CPU in render time.

Thank you too :)

Well, now I have a that "dream" machine. A lot of money... but I hope to recover that money in near future.

CPU: 4930k 3.4@4.25 (normal mode) 3.9@4.5 (Turbo mode)
Cooler: Noctua NH-D14 (is very big XD)
RAM: 64GB Gskill Ripjaws 2400 cas10 @ 2000 cas9 (2000 with 9-10-10-29 is faster than 2400 10-12-12-31 BUT I don´t see the diference)
Motherboard: Asus x79 Pro
GPU: Gigabyte GTX780ti OC 3GB
PSU: LCPower Arkangel 2.2 850w (is 6-7 years old but still working)

Now I can make renders 3 times faster (CPU), and with no limit in RAM (the bigest project I made needs 24GB).

I can try the GPU render, with new renderers (Octane, Arion...) and VRay-RT (this can´t do final renders but is very fast)

More RAM only helps in the moment that the HDD or SSD is uploading data to that RAM, if you have lots of memory is fast. But don´t help in the render process, is only CPU. Doesn´t matter if you have DDR3 1333 or 3000, the render time will be the same.

PD: Sorry, my english is basic XD
