12 GB or 14 GB ram

Alright, so right now I have 8 gb in total, split into 4 slots and each slot has 2 gb. I'm wondering if it's better to get 2x4 and then fill the other slots with 2. So, 4 2 4 2 which equals to 12. Or 1x8 and fill the rest with 2s which is 8 2 2 2, 14. I've searched up and people say to not have different ram type, because it won't function to its full. So that's why im thinking 4 2 4 2 is better, since they're the same on the same slots. I think that's how things work. Sorry if you don't understand. I just want to make sure before I waste money i don't need to waste. Thank you in advance.

2x4 +2x2 if it will work. There is no guarantee that it will work. Mix and match RAM is always a gamble.

Even it if does work, would dual channel be disabled? If so, there's a performance penalty right there.

If it works, then dual channel should be in effect. The two 4GB DIMMs together and the two 2GB DIMMs.
