[SOLVED] $1200 gaming PC build

Over 9 years ago I posted here and am still using the great PC that was recommended to me! I have since upgraded RAM/SSD/GPU but last purchase was R9 380X GPU in 2016 and now I'm looking to do an all new build.

Approximate Purchase Date: Within the next weekish but can wait a bit if it would help

Budget Range: $1100-1300 final cost

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming, streaming shows, surfing internet

Are you buying a monitor: Yes if it fits within my budget without downgrading other components too much. I'm fine using what I currently have for a bit longer though, LG LED Monitor IPS236V (https://www.lg.com/us/products/documents/LG-LED-Monitor-IPS236V-Specification.pdf )

It doesn't matter, building a new pc with an outdated old psu(10years seasonic group reg) is a bad time coming. Even really good units should be replaced if they're old. Psu's are hard to get atm, but they come in stock often enough that you can pick up a good unit if keep an eye on it.

Look for seasonic focus, any kind, or corsair txm/rm/rmx. Antec earthwatt gold pro is a seasonic relabel,so thats fine as well. The thermaltake toughpower ones are supposedly decent. Minimum acceptable unit it the corsair cx series, but a mid-high end rig shouldn't have "minimum".

Windows 10 is virtually free. Free unactivated with some features disabled, or keys from 3rd parties.

With such high ambient temp, getting a pair of 140mm fans will drop temps a fair bit. With 140mm fans, the meshify c is rated as one of the coolest running cases.

The toughpower is a good unit, but the rmx is the overall better performer. The case is atx and uses standard atx psu's. So yes, either psu will fit.

A fully modular psu just means you can leave some cables unplugged if they are unused.

Sorry to raise this thread again but I'm trying to do this build and many of the parts are out of stock and I don't trust myself to find equivalent parts.

So far the only things I have ordered are:

This Motherboard Gigabyte B550 GAMING X ATX AM4 Motherboard ($139.99 @ B&H) has said it will back in stock in 7-14 days since I first viewed it 4 days ago, should I purchase it now, or use another option? I haven't purchased from B&H before so I'm not sure how reliable that restock timeline is, I don't want to wait 4+ weeks for it to arrive.


Also I haven't purchased a Monitor yet because my current one is 23" and I'd prefer to stay in the 23-24" range.

Most b550 atx boards are oos atm, I'd sign up for an in stock notification on all atx b550 boards.
The elite is in stock, though bit more expensive.

The tomahawk max was a favorite of many people, up until b550 released with its superior vrms and features.

Haha, I have a 27" monitor. It took me quite some time to get used to the size, tbh, If I wasn't using a standing desk, I would've gone back to 24" as well.
I'd say wait on the monitor, many are oos as well.

I just ordered the elite, thanks! Do you have a recommendation for CPU and GPU? Unless the price might change again soon or there is another option I will buy the AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor from Best buy for $190 ($201 with sales tax here). I almost have a full PC so exciting

Edit: also I have been going over budget on stuff but I'd still be willing to spend up to $450 for a GPU

The 3600 will have nearly the same fps as a 3700x, so the 3600 is fine. You can always upgrade later if need be anyways.

For the gpu, since you'll be staying around 24" displays, 1080p is adequate, so a rtx 2060 super/rtx 2070 will be fine. A rtx 2070 super if you want 144hz in most titles.

Oh, with how expensive that 3600 is, you could get the 3700x and skip the aftermarket cooler, the 3700x comes with a decent cooler unlike the 3600.

If you really use PC over that long period of time I recommend waiting few more months as new hardware is just few months away and that will be big jump in performance. In the mean time I recommend adding as much as possible to budget and going all out and get satisfactory build which will last you over very long period of time without much of a performance compromise.
