120gb SSD or 250gb SSD?

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to get some opinions on which SSD I should get. I'm also getting a 1TB WD Hard drive, but is 120gb enough for an ssd for the kind of pc I'm looking to get? :

-3d modelling and animation (multiple programs)
-video editing (sony vegas)
- gaming (steam)

I am a freelance 3d modeller, and have an external 1tb seagate drive but I plan to use that as my backup drive. I just don't want to waste money on storage I'll never use. However, I've heard that 120gb's run out of space quite fast. Is the 250 better value for money and a safer bet for my line of work/uses? (both ssd's are the samsung 850 evo)

Cheers,

Tim

Any size under 120gb is a waste of money.

Get a 250gb Samsung EVO.

The only choices are 850 EVO or BX100 in that order.

Currently the 2 best on the market.

Samsung has a 35% market share for a reason , they are the best ad their SSD's have the longest lifespan.

I've used 60, 120, 256 and 512 SSDs this is what it breaks down to IMO.

60 - enough for the OS and maybe 1 other program
120 - enough for the OS and several large programs having a 2nd drive essential for misc files and having multiple modern games installed at the same time
256 - enough for general light use, still a good idea to have a 2nd drive for misc file storage but not required for simple users. aka its probably enough for your mom.
512 - should be enough space for all your programs unless you are trying to install your entire Steam library. 2nd drive for misc still recommended but not required.

bigger is always better of course so if the price for either a 120 or 256 is okay with you get the 256. Personally though saving for a 512 is probably best because at the size you really shouldn't be fighting for space for new programs/games unless you just keep installing games and never deleting them even if you haven't played them in months.

Purely from a performance standpoint, you should favor the 250 GB over 120 GB. The 120 GB SSDs typically have half the number of lanes (access half the number of flash dies in parallel), so perform slower for that reason.

SSDs 250 GB and larger currently use the same number of lanes because it's sufficient to max out SATA 3. As PCIe NVM drives become more common, I expect that to change. But currently, 250 GB, 500 GB, and 1TB all perform about the same. 120 GB is slower. 60 GB is slower yet.

For video editing, animation, and a game library, you should actually be deciding between 250 and 500 GB. Unless your Steam library is small or you're planning to store it on the HDD.

I plan to put my steam library on the HDD. Would a 120gb ssd still suffice, or play it safe with the 250?
