120hz (or higher) Monitor Question

Hey guys I just wanna ask.

Right now I have a 21 inch 60hz monitor.

BF4 runs smooth at average 50+ fps.

If I get a 120hz monitor, will I get a smoother experience if the frame rates are the same?

Is there a difference between, 60HZ @ 50+fps AND 120HZ @ 50+FPS?

if youre happy with 50+ fps then leave it for now. You wont notice any difference outputting 50+fps on a 120hz monitor, however you will notice a magical difference playing games you're able to output a higher frame rate.

G-sync enabled monitors or similar will be the future, might be worth waiting for now.

No, the hz directly effects fps. 60hz=60fps MAX, 120hz=120fps MAX. Personally I find anything above 60 not really worth it since it takes a lot of power to get new high-end games well past 60fps.

There is some differences. Probably more if you use V-sync and fail to reach 60 FPS all the time. With a 120hz or 144hz monitor, there are more frame times to fit into when you fail to reach your refresh rate.

Example, with a 60hz monitor, if you are at 40 FPS with v-sync on, you may experience some stuttering, because the frame times jump between 16ms and 33ms. With a 120hz monitor, you get frame times of 25ms. If you go up from there, it'll jump between 16ms and 25ms rather than 16 and 33ms. This lessens how much stutter you'd get.

Other than that, you won't fully experience the benefits of 120hz without getting 80+ FPS. Of course you can lower visual settings to take advantage of a 120hz monitor. There is no rule requiring you to use max settings, or the highest you can. PC gaming offers lots of options.

Well I am thinking of upgrading my 1680x1050 monitor to 1080p

I'd suggest just getting a 60hz 1080p monitor. You don't really NEED higher than 60fps, sure it looks a bit smoother, but to play games at higher than 60fps on ultra in 1080p takes a pretty serious PC build.
