Can i use the AMD Phenom II X4 955 125W CPU in my Dell Inspiron 546 with the 0F896N mobo? If so i also plan to get the Black Edition and OC. I have a Cooler Master Evo 212 waiting to be installed. The motherboard supports CPUs at 95W but i have read placed that I could use a 125W CPU with a good enough cooler. I know that putting a 125W CPU in a 95W mobo will cause the life to be decreased. If this is not possible what is the best CPU that i can get for my PC around $80?

It`s not a good idea to fit a 125w rated cpu in a motherboard rated for a 95w cpu on the cpu socket side of the motherboard.

You will cause strain on the voltage regulators of the motherboard for the cpus voltage management.
And the Vrm`s will heat up drastically to a point where they will either pop Blessed Noob.

Or as they get too hot the board will most likely suffer from freezing up, locking.
Or resetting it`s self during use.

The board may not even power up at all when you fit a 125w cpu in the cpu socket of the motherboard.
Simply I would not advise it at all.

Either run a 95w rated cpu with the board and or buy a new motherboard rated to take a 125w cpu.

If you put a 125w cpu in a board that is rated to run a maximum of 95w for the cpu your going to have to buy a new board anyway, so you might as well do it right from the start and get a 125w cpu capable socket.

Or your in fact loosing money if the 125w cpu breaks the 95w board. where you could of sold it to gain some money back as a working motherboard think of it that way.

Otherwise your doubling your losses.

I would advise that you check the maximum wattage the socket of the board will take if you can.

In some cases it only takes a bios firmware revision of the motherboard to allow some boards to work with a 125w cpu.
Because the bios firmware allows voltage tweaks for power to the cpu socket of the board.

could i buy the Phenom II X4 955 95W edition then instead and be safe? http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-AMD_(chipsets)/780G.html says these are all the compatible CPUs for the 780G socket that I have. Also what is the best CPU that i could get going by a 780G socket and 95W TDP? Could i go for the phenom ii x4 960t? it's unlocked and 95W. Would it be better than the phenom ii x4 955 95W locked?
