128gb or 256gb SSD for my setup?

After about 2 days of lusting after and researching various SSD purchase options, I've found that I can nab a 128gb Samsung 840 evo for $55, or a 256gb model for $85.

My laptop has a 1TB hdd that I'm going to convert to a secondary storage drive, using the SSD for my usual programs.

I use Photoshop/Illustrator/Inkscape pretty frequently for Web design purposes

Then there's the smattering of other programs I use, such as Firefox/Chrome, Windows Media Player, Microsoft Office 2013, Notepad++, Adobe Reader, Dropbox, etc.

Music production is my main squeeze though, so a grotesque amount of my hdd space is dedicated to music related stuff... roughly 640gb and always growing since 07. The core program I use only requires about 1gb of space, though.

Because this newer laptop can handle the monstrous sample libraries that a lot of higher end music plugins use, this HDD has more recently been seeing gigantic leaps in storage consumption whenever I pick up a new one.. anywhere from 10-100gb at a time. This leads me to believe that regardless of the SSD I decide on, a 2tb hdd uprgrade will probably be in my cards before the year is over. (Black Friday yo)

I've been more splurgy than usual recently, so I really want to save some money and get the 128, but my paranoia and the fact that I can get the 256 for less than a regular priced 128 module is eating at me.

Bottom line, do you think I NEED a 256 in this situation, or could I get by comfortably with a 128?

I would just get the 256GB one just so you have that bit of extra storage if you need it and besides it is cheaper than having to deal with all the issues which go along with running out of storage

If the use you describe is typical, you may regret spending the extra cash, but you will regret the lack of capacity. Go for the 256GB. You'll still need to manage your filing, shifting files or programs to your HDD, but you'll have to do it much less frequently than with the 128GB.

After stewing on it for a few more hours, I decided to go ahead and get the 256gb drive...... The possibility of needing the space outweighed the price concerns. I'm sure I wont regret playing it safe in the long run. Thanks for the input guys

De nada

I say, go for the bigger... The bigger which is the 256 GB means more storage space as well as speed. Actually when you go for the 256 GB you are saving--- based on what you have stated that you are doing with this PC, you may well want the space. I encourage you to go for the 256 GB as storage cannot be too much but can easily be too small... You don't want to regret later down the road when you are running short on space; that you didn't get the 256 GB and at that time might even have to run to replace the 128 GB finally with the 256.
So, its better to be safe than sorry-- go for the 256... And try saving your money on other occasions afterwards.
