Hello

I saw something somewhere recently saying that you might want to orient your cooler differently for the 12th gens to better cool the new chip?

It’s for a 12700K and a Be Quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4 on a Z690 Gigabyte Aorus Pro DDR4

Anyone tried this or heard anything concrete as to whether it actually makes a difference?

I would assume the cooler is normally installed so the fans blow directly in and out of the front of the case…

If you move it 90 degrees – wouldn’t that really mess up case airflow – or would it not matter?

Thank you for your help

Most case are built with front-to-rear airflow in mind. If you try to make a bottom-to-top airflow it most likely not going to work. The biggest problem however is not even the case - it's GPU. If you have any GPU installed in motherboard PCIe slot then rotating CPU cooler will make it just suck hot air from GPU, which is not really good for cooling. I would only consider such setup when you have case that has bottom intake and top exhaust plus GPU is elsewhere connected to motherboard via riser.
".............the cooler is normally installed so the fans blow directly in and out of the front of the case… "

No.

CPU cooler fan or fans and front intake should both blow toward case rear.

Exhaust on back should suck air out not blow air in.

So all 3 of those fans are moving air in the same general direction. Front to rear.

You can fiddle with things if you want, but above is bog standard and best for most situations.

Side venting and fans on top may be totally useless and offer no improvement.

Due to the size of the cooler, you're relegated to having the cooler mounted with the fans moving air from the front(where the ram slots are) to the back(where the rear I/O ports are located)...that by the way was using the motherboard's orientation whereby the ram slots are vertical and they are to the left of the CPU socket. If you were working with a case by Silverstone whereby the exhaust is to the top, while the motherboard is rotated 90 Deg, then the cooler would still be in the orientation mentioned prior.

Mind sharing where you saw that something and share it with us to help us understand their point of view?

You will also need to mention the make and model of the case you're working with or are trying to build in. On a side note and probably the last point, the board you have does not show up on their motherboard compatibility check tool;
