I am ready to join the pc master race. Ordering components soon. Can I stick to the 1300ish budget but get better components than what I think I want? Also, any compatibility issues? My list:

CPU i5-4690k
Motherboard ASRock H97M-ITX
RAM Kingston Hyper-X Fury 2x4GB
CPU Cooler Hyper 212 Evo
PSU EVGA Supernova 650G1
Graphics card Nvidia GTX 970
Hard drive 120GB Samsung 850 EVO Series SSD
Corsair 250D Mini ITX Tower Case

Thank you in advance for your advice.

Everything looks really good. If you want to save $50, just go with 8gb of ram. You won't get much of a benefit from 16gb unless you're doing heavy multitasking . If you're gaming, just go for 8gb
Also, you don't NEED an aftermarket cooler for a locked CPU, but it will be quieter if you have it. Again, make sure it'll fit in that case. Looks good. I'm thinking about switching to a mini-ITX case/board and getting the Xeon E3-1232v3 because it's an i7 that you can't overclock without integrated graphics. So you can keep that in mind while doing all of this

most ppl say go G2 PSU so you should probably do that. Also, just a personal question but why ITX? Not that it'll gimp the build or anything (as long as the 970 will fit you're good) but why? Otherwise good build, try to go 16gb RAM just because RAM is so cheap now lol (not required).

If you plan on overclocking your i5-4690k, you'll need a Z97 board, not an H97. You can't overclock on an H97 board. Another option would be to keep the H97 board and switch to an i5-4690 (non-k) or maybe a Xeon E3-1231v3
Another thing to consider: Will the Hyper 212 Evo fit in that case? Google that before you buy it
Also: If you end up not getting the 4690k, you won't really need an aftermarket cooler, though it could cool any locked CPU and be quieter than the stock fan

Also: If you want to get the absolute most bang for your buck, you could get a cheaper case, ram that is $5-10 cheaper, save a little cash on the PSU, and then put the money saved towards a better GPU or something along those lines. It seems like a solid build, but I feel like it shouldn't be costing $1,300... Maybe I'm just confused (it's late). Also, you should probably toss in a 1tb WD Blue or 1tb Seagate Barracuda hard drive along with your SSD if you plan on having more than a handful of games

I just learned about partspicker.com so ill run the list through there (I'm on a tablet now). I love the case so sticking with that, but will check on the possible compatibility issue. Will definitely pick a bigger ssd. Thanks!

Is Skylake worth it though? Is it a rebrand that is slightly faster? Will he see any tangible performance bumps? Honest questions. A Skylake CPU might put him over budget and cause him to have to go for a cheaper GPU like a 285 or 960
