Hi all,

A friend wants to start getting serious with his video productions and ask me to put together a workstation. He already has the P6X58D
http://www.bestdirect.ca/products/223465/P6X58D%20Premium/ASUS/

Want to make it possible for him to do HD video editing with ease. I've got a blu-ray burner in the build although I have never dabbled in Bu-ray ...yet.

The budget for the rest was 1500 and I put this together:

CPU: i7 930
http://www.bestdirect.ca/products/227197/BX80601930/Intel/

RAM: Corsair XMS3 1333
http://www.bestdirect.ca/products/217208/TR3X6G1333C7/CORSAIR/

GPU: XFX 5750
http://www.bestdirect.ca/products/222021/HD575XZNFC/XFX/

HDD: WD Cav Green
http://www.bestdirect.ca/products/225943/WD20EARS/Western%20Digital/

Blu-Ray Burner: LG BH10LS30
http://www.bestdirect.ca/products/225707/BH10LS30.AVBR10B/LG%20Electronics/

Case: Coolermaster Haf X
http://www.bestdirect.ca/products/229568/RC-942-KKN1/COOLERMASTER/

PSU: Corsair TX750
http://www.bestdirect.ca/products/166446/CMPSU-750TX/CORSAIR/

FAN: Hyper 212
http://www.bestdirect.ca/products/218427/RR-B10-212P-GP/COOLERMASTER/

Windows 7

I an not an expert with x58 especially with RAM configs, so I just went with what was in a combo from newegg to start. I have not looked into compatabiility of others yet.

I hope you all don't mind me skipping the template, its just a straight forward question.

Thanks!

Edit: Noob mistake, chose wrong socket type!

youre going to want a better graphics card. look at 5850.

the haf-x is way more than you need. look at the mid-tower haf cases, or the 690 II.

also, lose the bluray. its not really worth it right now.

those price changes should even out.

Can i just inquire why such a high end video card is needed? There is no gaming being done, unless there is something very obvious about video editing I am not aware of that required this.

A full tower is what he wants :\ believe me I said the same thing. He has absolutely zero hardware knowledge and is one of those people who believes more expensive is better. Not my money lol.

I appreciate the input, but I was hoping to hear a little more as to the reasons why. For the blu-ray as well. I kind of figured if you are making your own videos, why not cover all the bases.

thanks

You could clearly spend less on the case if desired, but if you want the HAF X, who am I to argue? :)

The only real question I have is on the hard drive. The Caviar Green will definitely work, but it's going to be substandard as a boot drive. Caviar Green drives are 5400 rpm, though Western Digital goes to great lengths to not put that in the advertising. You might want to look at getting a 500 GB Samsung Spinpoint F3 or Seagate 7200.12 for the boot drive, and then getting the Caviar Green as a storage drive.

I'd only pay the extra for a Blu-ray burner if you know he's going to be burning Blu-ray discs. A standard DVD burner should only be $20-30, while a Blu-ray burner is north of $100. I wouldn't pay that much for one right now unless you know it's going to be used.

I think you could probably go lower than the 5750 for the graphics card. A 5670 should be adequate, you might even be able to go lower.

In theory, if you got a smaller/less expensive case, lost the Blu-ray burner, and went with a smaller graphics card, you could probably afford a 60 GB OCZ Vertex 2/Agility 2/Mushkin Callisto/G.Skill Phoenix Pro/Corsair Force SSD.

I would suggest a RAID 0+1 config, since you will have lots of data ( hence raid 1, to make sure you dont loose it) which you will need to access quickly( hence the raid 0).
so you will need 4 HDD's in total.
