In benchmark testing, going from 4 to 8 to 16 GB of RAM made little difference in FPS across most of the games tested. The advantage of the additional RAM was that the system was more forgiving of background processes.

Yep it all depends on what you do and you use your rig, if it's for a new rig - 8GB is the accepted entry level point - even most pre-built rigs these days are a minmum of 6-8GB

Agree that 8 GB is good starting point for a new system, just no emergency to upgrade the RAM from 4 to 8 GB on an older system if the expected benefit is increasing FPS in games. For other benefits, such as video editing or multitasking, it is another story.
