Well, i suppose you kown that you will need at least a 1080ti or probably a SLI of 1080s to get the 100+ fps you will need to use those Hz?

The diference between GSyn and Freesync is mainly that the one works with Nvidia and have specific HW in the monitor and allow wider band of Hz to be usefull, second works with ATI, dont need Hw on the monitor (is cheaper) and is more limited.

For 144Hz at 1440p due the fact that the limiting factor is the Gpu power you could only get the gpu horsepower with Nvidia, therefore you will need to go the GSync route.

Wouldnt a GTX 1070 be enough??

A 1070 is enough if you're willing to turn down a few settings from ULTRA to MEDIUM(+)

Main difference:
G-Sync is a hardware module inside the screen and has a range from 30-165Hz
Freesync is not a hardware module inside the screen. Latency is a tiny bit worse (basically unnoticeable) but the range is limited. There's not a continuous freesync range from 30-144Hz and the standard is a bit messy. With G-Sync you always know what you're buying with freesync you gotta look at the specs in details. A 144Hz freesync screen can sometimes have a freesync range between only 68-96Hz.

Also: G-Sync is only supported by NVIDIA while Freesync is an open standard which NVIDIA doesn't support though.

Both technologies tie framerate to the output of your GPU. That eliminates tearing and lags due to FPS drops.

With all those requesites probably an Acer Predator XB271HU, there is not a lot of monitors WQHD with 144Hz and GSync and you will need to pay premium for it anyway.

But personally i would drop the 144Hz and go for an ultrawide pannel (3440x1440) with the 1080 xD

it largely depends on your planned upgrade-cycle and the committment you're willing to make.
the XB271HU is a superb monitor. but you know...it costs a fortune

it depends on when/what you're looking to upgrade.
I personally use a screen for ~10years. if you're the same, I suggest you get a good one, even though your current GPU might not be able to push the needed frames right now fully, since the next generation of cards will if history is any indication (gotta remember that the 1060 is as powerful as a 980, so I reckon a 1160 will be as powerful as a 1080).
getting a 1080p screen in 2017 is kind of a waste of money imo. yeah it's cheaper right now but cost more in the long run and you're better off using your old or buying a used one for the time being if you really need one.

if you're looking at a quick upgrade cycle, or an extensive GPU-upgrade cycle, planning on using the 1070 for 5 years+, then a 1080p screen is of course a nice thing to have and is attractive to spend money on.
However for a 1080p screen, I wouldn't go with adaptive sync rather with an IPS, maybe ultrawide.

haha ultrawide sounds tempting but the thing is i mostly play dota 2

GTA 5, Batman Arkham knight, HITMAN absolution etc. once i finished all the mission i seldom touch it anymore

Occasionally CS sometimes...

Why do you even suggest a Ultrawide btw??

I was looking at the dell s2716dg or either the benq XL2730... not sure if i really want an ultra wide

Im currently using a 1080p 27" IPS display by aoc and also a 23" one by dell... all running ats 60hz... you know the pc race game and its hard 2 control the upgrade urge.... haha so yeah im not really sure... my gtx 970 is just 1 years old

Yeahh definitely.... my question was assuming i had a gtx 1070... but one person said i need at least a 1080 or 980 sli to run it.. i was pretty sad... anyways i would definitely upgrade both at one go

The 980/Ti is required to run it at ultra settings.
However some features aren't necessary in my opinion for 1440p especially if you aren't used to it. Due to the higher resolution AA for example plays a.much minor role and can be turned down. So are a couple of other settings. You can push the necessary frames on a 1070 if you're willing to take compromises.
Seeing how good 1440p actually looks compared to 1080p these compromises would probably be worth it until you upgrade the GPU.
