Question 144 Hz black screen; only 60 Hz is possible

I connected my Asus GeForce 1060 6 GB to this screen:

https://aoc.com/uk/gaming/products/monitors/g2460pf. I can choose 144 Hz, but then the screen goes black, and after 30 seconds, it drops back down to 60 Hz for security reasons. I’m using a DVI-D cable. Why can’t it work at 144 Hz? I also tried enabling and disabling V-Sync. Additionally, I experience some lag when trying to play games in Chrome.
Does anyone know how I can get this to work properly? Also, if I buy a new HDMI cable, is the maximum output for the AOC screen limited to 120 Hz since it uses HDMI 1.4?
I downloaded all the new and updated GeForce drivers. Should I disable my onboard graphics, which I used to use before installing the graphics card?"

Hey there,

Yes, HDMI 1.4 will get you 120hz. But, If your GPU has a DP port, then get a DP cable which will give you 144hz and G-sync compatibility.

No, sadly not.

Does your GPU have a DP port? If so, it's only the cost of the cable. 10£$€ or so. If it has HDMI, you could try a HDMI/DP converter, but I'm not sure how effective it would be.

Which model GPU do you have? The exact model.

Edit: My apologies. Your monitor does not have a DP port, so HDMI 120hz is your only option.

How do I find the exact model? I know it’s the ASUS 6 GB version of the GTX 1060. I also tried an old HDMI cable; I don’t have the model number for that cable, but it only shows a maximum refresh rate of 60 Hz when plugged in. DVI-D allows for higher rates, like 144 Hz, but it doesn’t work. I guess I need to buy a DisplayPort cable then. I already have a DisplayPort cable, but it does not work. I hope it’s just the cable, and a new one will fix it.
