144 hz monitor only available for 60 hz? I need help!

So i have a asus vg248 monitor, and a xfx r9 270x graphics card and I get cant my monitor to run 144hz. I used the cord that was in the box (the dvi d cord) and plugged straight to the graphics card. I have all of the latest drivers on the monitors, Please help!
