Recently we bought a ViewSonic XG 2530 gaming monitor in hopes of acheiving higher frame rates for our experiments involving stimulus presentation but unfortunately I can't get a 144 Hz refresh rate.
Our desktop (Dell OptiPlex 9020 SFF) has,
a) Intel HD 4600 and,
b) AMD Radeon HD 8490
Setup-wise, we have a dual monitor setup (a Dell 60 Hz monitor and the ViewSonic XG 2530) and I started off by connecting both the monitors to the Intel, which I soon realised won't work as there probably isn't enough bandwidth to drive one at 144 Hz and the other at 60 Hz.
So, then, I was aiming to connect the XG monitor to one of the graphics card and the Dell to the other. The XG connected to the AMD never gave me a refresh rate of 144 Hz. The XG connected to the Intel briefly gave me 144 Hz (tested using a python based stimulus presentation software - PsychoPy), however connecting the Dell to the AMD reverted the XG back to 60 Hz (and sometimes 65Hz). I've since resorted to connecting the Dell via DVI to USB (DisplayLink) and have the XG monitor connected to the Intel. However, I still can't achieve the 144 Hz.
All this while the Windows 'Screen Resolution' is telling me that the monitor is at 144 Hz, but a test in our presentation software reports that a frame is refreshed every 16.7 ms, which is 60 Hz.
I am using DisplayPort cables, have the latest drivers installed (re-installed them as well), have switched Vertical Sync to 'Always Off', and made sure DisplayPort 1.2 is switched on as well - all of this to no avail.
Would really appreciate any thoughts and ideas!
