1440 monitor can I use it at 1080 aswell ? dont know if this is stupid question lol

I wanted to get a 1440 144hz monitor but i also play my xbox on my current 1920x1080 monitor i was just wondering excuse me if this is a really stupid question just unsure , but if i plug my xbox one up to it to play a xbox game will the res just go to 1920x1080 ? or how does it work ...or is the monitor i guess 1440 and thats that ..thanks for any help guys ! cheers

Your thinking is quite correct.
The monitor should adjust to the resolution that your xbox outputs, automatically.
You can run a monitor at any settings that you require, provided that it is supported, so you could, in theory, run it at 640x480, if you wanted to. (not sure why you would though 😉 )

as said it will run at 1920 x 1080 the picture just wont be as sharp
