Hello, I have an LG 27GL850-B and Intel core i7-8700K w/ Intel UHD 630 integrated graphics. I currently have no dedicated GPU because I'm waiting for the RTX 3000 series to drop, and I have no older dedicated GPU I can use right now.

I can run the display via the HDMI cable that came with the monitor at 1440p 60hz or 1080p 120Hz through the motherboard (Aorus Z390 Pro Wifi) HDMI port on the back.
I was wondering if I could get a "better" HDMI cable to run the display at full fledged 1440p 144Hz through HDMI, until I buy my new card and use displayport. As in, maybe the included HDMI cable supports up to version 1.4 bandwidth and getting an HDMI 2.0 cable would allow me to get the full resolution and refresh rate of the monitor.

I have confirmed via multiple specsheets online that the LG 27GL850 has 2 HDMI 2.0 ports (so it can run at 1440p/144Hz through HDMI) , and my mobo's manual states, in regard to the HDMI back port:
"The maximum supported resolution is 4096x2160@30 Hz, but the actual resolutions supported are dependent on the monitor being used. "

Additionally, if I'm not mistaken the UHD 630 can run 1440p 144Hz provided you have the right connectivity and monitor to support it.

So, my understanding is that the only reason that there's no 1440p/144Hz option in the display adapter settings is the actual HDMI cable that I'm using, which must be apparently v1.4.

Is my assumption correct? I don't want to spend money on an extra cable if it doesn't actually push 1440p144Hz. Should I buy a cable then?

I have the GL83a which is the same monitor but without the USB hub. I know mine defaults to 100Hz at 1440p via HDMI from my laptop but it never really bothered me as when gaming I use my desktop via DP. I just looked up the instructions for your monitor and its a little odd, on page 34 the recommended when using HDMI is "2560 x 1440 @ 100 Hz (HDMI)" but it also says the max is "2560 x 1440 @ 144 Hz (HDMI)". My guess is at 100Hz the monitor still supports HDR but at 144Hz it does not as HDMI. I will try on mine later and see if I can get it to 144Hz if I turn off HDR.

Thing is, my monitor in my current configuration only goes up to 1440p 60Hz, nothing above that. So maybe it's the port on my motherboard that is version 1.4, thus supporting 144Hz only on 1080p. I can't fins any way to check the port's version though

FYI on my laptop using HDMI although it defaults to 100Hz will allow me to select 144Hz. However just noticed HDR is not available over HDMI at all, not sure if that is to be expected.

I didn't know that the UHD 630 doesn't support HDMI 2.0
However, after more carefully reading the motherboard manual it says the HDMI port is version 1.4.

So it seems even if the iGPU supported HDMI 2.0, the mobo port would still be the bottleneck.

Thanks for the insight anyways, I'll be running in 1440p/60 for now until I get an external GPU.
