So I'm looking to buy a monitor in the next couple of weeks, and have narrowed it down to two options:

At the moment I'm heavily swinging towards the 1440p option, since I do a lot of multitasking and some graphics work in Photoshop, Illustrator and Terragen, and gaming isn't a top priority for me. Is the difference between 60hz and 144hz very noticable?

I game a bit, but not a huge amount, so that made me feel more inclined towards the 1440p option. It is worth noting that my hardware (r9 380, 4460, 8gb) probably isn't capable of running most new games at 1440p at a decent fps without heavily decreasing the graphics, so when playing new games I would probably have to play at 1080p anyway.

Does 144hz make a big difference to the gaming experience, or am I more likely to enjoy 1440p in some games and in my graphics work

For those it is better to get 1440p IPS, not TN panel. You'll want beautiful colors and depth.
Pick the 1440P monitor.

You will have a better IPS image and viewing angle. 178/178

Your R9-380 is perfectly capable of running at 1440P, even with games.
The value of 1440hz and freesync is when playing fast action games.
Freesync matches your graphics FPS rate to the monitor which will reduce screen tearing.
Actually, many games are capped at 60fps anyway.
If you are a competitive gamer playing first person shooters, only then might you want the 144hx option.

I mostly play third person games and RPGs like Assassin's Creed and Witcher 3. I take it for those I'll be better off with the 1440p?
