1440p Monitor not down scaling to 1080p properly

Ive been trying to play some games at 1080p on my computer so I can set the graphics higher, but whenever I try to do that I always get a black box around the game. I set the scaling to Full-Screen in Nvidia control panel and checked the box for "override games.." and "preform scaling on" is set to gpu, I feel like I am overlooking something but I can't figure it out or find working solutions online.

I am using a Acer XZ271U

Gpu: GTX 1080

I'm curious to what games you're trying to scale? The 1080 is a pretty good match for a 1440p monitor. What is your CPU?

To try to answer your question. Have you tried setting the resolution from the game menu?

The main game I was trying is GTA 5, Im setting it to fullscreen but it just adds the black box. It does it with other games such as Borderlands 2, so I know its not at the games fault.

My cpu is a i5-7600K (not overclocked)
