Hello,
If I play a game at 1440p then record at 1080p will it look better then, 1080p gameplay recorded at 1080p?

Thanks,

Record lossless, transcode the files you'll be using to an intermediate codec, in this case DNxHD90 if there's a ton of movement in the clips. Delete the files you won't be using.

It'll look slightly worse, because it's still restricted to record a certain amount of pixels, and 1920x1080 doesn't cover the screen. By changing the resolution in-game to 1920x1080 then recording, is giving YOU a worse experience but not your VIEWERS, as it's just capturing everything 1:1 pixel mapped. If you have any questions or need help to make this happen, let me know.

All the best!
What capture source are you using? Compression is the big killer, and is the reason for the difference between playing a game, and watching a 1080p video of a game. I'm familiar with two capture programs, OBS and ShadowPlay. Shadow play has a lossless setting, but using it will make the video files huge. OBS has more flexability, and different games only work with certain settings. It's a picky beast.

You can set either of those two programs to record any size, regardless of the monitor you're playing on. They use different methods to capture, and there's the heart of the situation. Shadowplay uses a chip on the card to duplicate the video stream being sent to your monitor. It uses no resources, so it affects your gameplay in no way. The caveat is it only works with DirectX games. OBS works with EVERYTHING. But it's a butt-ache because different games work different ways. Some games you can capture from the GPU, some games you have to capture from the Screen. And it doesn't have hardware acceleration. It uses a blunt force approach to recording that is using the CPU with as much power as you can give it. It lets you set how many cores you want to dedicate to recording, but I would finish off by saying that if you only have a Dual Core, OBS is not the software for you.

It will look as good as or worse. The reason is that is is being downscaled. The method of downscaling varies but it won't look better. Can only look the same or worse.

Incorrect. Downscaling works fine. Its a modern form of AA in games. Upscaling is the one that doesn't work. You can't add detail to enlarging images. Downscaling created the additional detail when it rendered, and will remain for the most part when the size is reduced.

Why exactly is it incorrect?

We are not talking about AA in games or downscaling in that sense. We are talking about recording a 1440p source at 1080p. When it is downscaled data is lost. There are differing methods of downscaling but they all are resampling the higher resolution to a lower one by discarding data.

Think of it like an MP3. Downsampling a 192 bitrate file to 128 doesn't make it sound better. It can only sound the same or worse. Never better.

Hello,
Thanks for all of your answers. So will it look better or worse if I recorded a 1440p game at 1080p then a 1080p game recorded at 1080p? Also playing at 1440p and recording at 1080p will kill your fps more?

Thanks,

Hello,
Thanks for your response. Is this the same for 4K as I may upgrade in the future. For 4K if I downscale to 1440p or 1080p it will look worse? Also if I record at a lower resolution then the image displayed it will look worse for the viewer but not me?
As you stated before if I record at 1080p and play at 1440p it will look worse for the viewer but not me, is that correct?

Thanks,
