144fps+ on a 144hz monitor?

Hey everyone, I was planning to buy a 1440p 144hz monitor, over a 240hz 1080p monitor. Can I run games at 144fps+ without much tearing (g-sync enabled) at 144hz or do I need to cap the fps at 144fps. Thanks for the answer as this will help decide whether or not o get 240hz 1080p or 144hz 1440p.

Gsync does not work above the refresh rate. So if FPS goes above 144fps you may get some noticeable tearing even with gsync on. Unless all you play is CSGO or some other competitive games I would still personally much prefer a 1440p 144hz panel.
