I have a question, my laptop has got a 2.0 HDMI and I want to buy a 144hz monitor, accurately the Viewsonic XG240and I just wanted to know if I connect the laptop with the monitor with a HDMI 2.0 cable, will I get the 1080p 144hz?

Is that Viewsonic XG240R? Couldn't find only XG240.

https://www.viewsonic.com/us/xg240r.html#specs

Between specs and manual, whoever typed documentation for Viewsonic made a mess of it. Specs say Hdmi 1.4 144Hz and manual says Hdmi 2 144Hz. Id say it's the latter and if your laptop has Hdmi 2 and this is the monitor you're looking at you should have no problem. Hdmi 1.4 is capable of 120Hz.
XG2401, I'm sorry, technically it should be able, no?

Yeah you're probably right. Xg2401's specs and manual suggests 120Hz over Hdmi but seeing discrepancies with hdmi version between website specs and manual it's hard to know what to make of it. It's confusing and poor professionalism from Viewsonic's documentation. I trust Glenwing so go by his guidance.

Here's another guide of his at Linus with a nifty built in tool

Hdmi Hz is not limited by the source but rather if the display allows it which is explained in Glenwing's guide.
